produce roughly 8 percent of the campus’s total electricity load.
The final step came in the form of a
landmark deal to conserve in perpetuity
2,100 acres of forestland on Middlebury’s
Bread Loaf Mountain campus in Ripton,
Vt. By conserving the Bread Loaf lands,
Middlebury can count the carbon sequestration of the preserved forest toward
its carbon reduction efforts, rather than
purchasing credits elsewhere. Continuing
to look for places to save energy, Middlebury is also investigating participation in
a project to build a facility that would turn
cow manure and other organic fuel into
renewable natural gas, a step that could
further cut back the use of fuel oil and
compressed natural gas on campus.
WATERHUB® WINS AT WEFTEC
This past fall, the WaterHub® at
Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., accepted
the Water Environment Federation’s 2016
Project Excellence Award – the project’s
14th award win. As a globally recognized
water industry organization, WEF is dedi-
cated to connecting water professionals
and promoting awareness and innova-
tions within the water space. The honor
was presented at an award ceremony at
the 2016 WEFTEC conference in New
Orleans, La. The award recognized the
WaterHub, designed and built by Sustain-
able Water, as a project that “contributes
to the sustainability of water resources
and makes a profound impact on the fu-
ture through education and engagement
with water professionals.”
The WaterHub at Emory University is
a campuswide on-site water reclamation
system utilizing eco-engineering process-
es to clean wastewater for nonpotable
uses. It is the first system of its kind to be
installed in the United States. Since its
commissioning in May 2015, the Water-
Hub reclaimed over 40 million gal of
wastewater, according to the WEF Project
Excellence Award subcommittee.

You should not have to choose between innovation or efficiency.
Carrier‘s centrifugal chillers with semi-hermetic motors are the
overwhelming choice in the industry due to higher reliability, leak-free
design and the reduced need for additional mechanical room cooling.
