2 million sq m ( 21. 5 million sq ft) of built
space in hotels, residences, offices, retail
outlets, entertainment venues and medical facilities. The development is bringing
luxury high-rise buildings to the landscape of a city historically characterized
by small low-rise structures. It also aims
to make Abdali a travel destination in its
own right, drawing more tourists to Amman, especially among those who visit
Jordan for its ancient ruins and natural
reducing power consumption, Empower
is conserving potable fresh water through
the use of treated sewage effluent (TSE)
in its plants in combination with reverse
osmosis technology in the desalination of
dual- or triple-treated wastewater. Using
TSE technology in some of its plant facilities ( 10 percent of them), the company
saved 295 million gal of potable water in
2017 – equivalent to the water volume of
537 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
One Empower customer, the five-star
Atlantis, The Palm resort, showcases quite
a singular application of district cooling.
Set on the stunning Palm Jumeirah island
– manmade in the shape of a stylized
palm tree, off the Dubai coast – the resort incorporates a theme of the mythical undersea city of Atlantis throughout.
It opened in 2008, with more than 1,500
guest rooms; award-winning restaurants
and entertainment; retail boutiques;
beaches, pools and a water park; and
a top-rated Dubai attraction, The Lost
Chambers Aquarium. Empower supplies
chilled-water district cooling to Atlantis,
The Palm from two of its four plants on
the Palm Jumeirah Crescent – keeping not
only resort guests comfortable but also,
uniquely, the 65,000 marine animals in
the aquarium, as well as the dolphins and
sharks in other resort attractions.
More than 250 species of tropical
fish as well as rays, sharks and other
sea creatures are on display in The Lost
Chambers Aquarium, which features 10
“chambers” connected by glass tunnels
along with the massive, semi-open Ambassador Lagoon. Not only can visitors
view the marine life throughout the
aquarium, but they can also take the
plunge and scuba dive or snorkel in the
lagoon. The Ambassador Lagoon alone
contains 11 million liters (more than
2. 9 million gal) of water, enough to fill
the equivalent of 4. 5 Olympic-sized
Empower’s district cooling service
is critical to the viability of the marine
ecosystems at the aquarium. These
ecosystems require carefully controlled
ambient water temperatures amid
Dubai’s sunny, tropical desert climate.
The Ambassador Lagoon temperature
must be maintained at 26 degrees C
(78.8 F), while The Lost Chambers’ 21
individual tanks are kept at an average
24 C (75.2 F) with two other special
tanks in the 16-20 C ( 60.8-68 F) range.
An energy transfer station at Atlan-
tis, ETS 3, is equipped with three heat
exchangers dedicated to handling the
3,266-ton cooling load of the Ambassa-
dor Lagoon and the aquarium chambers.
A total of 32 process-side heat exchang-
ers transfer the cooling energy from the
district chilled water to the lagoon and
aquarium tanks. Also at ETS 3, another
three heat exchangers provide a 4,156-
ton cooling load of building space in 36
retail outlets and seven restaurants. The
entire process and building cooling sys-
tem is fully automated and monitored
24/7 by the building management sys-
Empower’s district cooling service is
critical for temperature control throughout the Atlantis resort and its many attractions. Attendees at DistrictCooling2018
will have the opportunity to visit ETS 3 as
well as the Ambassador Lagoon and its
“Life Support System” (for water filtration
and temperature control) on tours following the conference.
