World’s Largest Pellet Plant
On Track
According to a Nov. 8 Moscow Times
article, the world’s largest pellet plant in
Vyborg, Russia, was to begin production
by the end of 2010. Owned by Russian
pulp and paper company Vyborgskaya
Cellulose, the plant has a production
capacity of more than 900,000 tons of
wood pellets per year. Swedish trading
house Ekman & Co., which has an exclusive
sales agreement with Vyborgskaya, says it is
looking to sell large volumes of the pellets
to industrial users, primarily power and
cogeneration plants across Europe.
An Ekman representative said that the
company already has several smaller
contracts to deliver pellets to small
combined heat and power plants in
Scandinavia. The raw material for the
pellets consists primarily of logs from
Russia and Belarus. Vyborgskaya has
several large 49-year leases on forest
land in the Leningrad and Pskov regions.
