Veolia Energy Grand Rapids
Lowers Emissions
Rapid Growth Media reported July 1
that Veolia Energy Grand Rapids LLC has
reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by
5 percent annually with the installation
of an Economizer heat recovery system.
This reduction in the steam system’s carbon footprint is equivalent to the annual
CO2 emissions of 1,000 vehicles. The
Economizer project earned Veolia Energy
an innovation award in June from the
Energy Solutions Center, a North American
trade association for utilities and equipment providers.
Veolia Energy contracted with
Progressive AE of Grand Rapids last year to
custom-design and build the Economizer,
which became operational last November.
In addition to lowering emissions, the unit
has also decreased plant fuel consumption
by 5 percent. Installation of the Economizer
is the latest efficiency upgrade the company
has made to the system, which it purchased
from Kent County in December 2008.
