Data Center to Tap
Waste Heat
Estonian mobile telecommunications
company Elisa, in partnership with energy
supplier Fortum, is building a new data
center in Espoo, Finland, that will capture
heat generated by the facility’s computers
for use in the city’s district heating system. If
built as a traditional server center, Elisa says
the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions would
reach approximately 2,000 metric tons per
year; instead, this center is expected to
reduce CO2 emissions in the Espoo region
by about 7,500 tons annually. The service is
based on the joint production of cooling for
the server facility and district heating.
