UAE’s Largest Preinsulated
Pipe Manufacturing Facility
At a Jan. 20 ceremony, the new
Empower-Logstor Insulated Pipes Systems
(ELIPS) plant was inaugurated in Jebel Ali,
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Attending
the opening were His Royal Highness the
Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and His
Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed
Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The plant is the
UAE’s largest preinsulated pipe manufacturing facility.
ELIPS is a joint venture between
Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corp.
(Empower) and Logstor, the world’s largest
manufacturer of preinsulated pipes. The $25
million facility will cater to the requirements
of district cooling services as well as the oil
and gas industry across the Middle East.
Through ELIPS, Empower expects to
save between 15 percent and 25 percent
on the cost of preinsulated pipes for its
various projects. The plant should benefit
from its location in the Jebel Ali industrial
area, which provides easy access to both the
Dubai and Abu Dhabi markets.
Florida A&M Going Green
With Siemens
Florida A&M University (FAMU) is
now on the path to a greener and more
sustainable campus for students and
faculty. It has signed a new $2.4 million
energy savings performance contract
with the Building Technologies Division of
Siemens Industry Inc. The company will
help the Tallahassee, Fla., campus maximize
the energy and resource efficiency of its
buildings, improving the environment and
reducing energy consumption.
Work has already begun to install
pipe insulation, steam trap replacements
and lighting upgrades at the campus’s
central plant. When work concludes in
spring 2010, Siemens guarantees energy
savings that will provide equivalent cost
savings (depending on utility rates during the 10-year contract) of more than
$4.1 million, enough to cover the financing and provide a return on the overall
investment. Once implemented, retrofits
and upgrades are calculated to reduce
carbon dioxide emissions by 4. 5 million
pounds annually, equivalent to planting
nearly 15 acres of trees.
FAMU is home to 12,274 students. Its
campus encompasses 156 buildings and
some 3. 9 million sq ft.
Stanley Consultants,
ClearView Team Up

partnership to provide a comprehensive
approach to helping university and district energy facilities improve combined
heat and power equipment performance
and availability. The partnership integrates Stanley’s engineering and technical consulting expertise with ClearView’s
Next Generation asset monitoring software, which provides in-depth visualizations of equipment, plant or unit performance that support improvements in
performance, predictive maintenance and
early fault detection.

Montpelier Wins Federal
Energy Grant
As announced in January, the city of
Montpelier, Vt., will receive an $8 million
grant for a combined heat and power
system that will serve the Capitol complex, City Hall and up to 156 additional
downtown buildings. It will be fueled with
wood chips harvested locally. By providing
1. 8 million k Wh of power to the grid, the
system will maximize operating efficiency
and reduce thermal costs for consumers. The project will be a public-private
partnership among the city of Montpelier,
Vermont’s Department of Buildings and
General Services, Veolia Energy and the
Biomass Energy Resource Center. The city
estimates that 35 total net new jobs will
directly and indirectly be created within
the project’s first year.
