resources should be completed by July
2010. Assuming study results confirm
project feasibility, Dalkia intends to
develop a 10-15 MW capacity installation for the initial phase. Ideally, a
two-well geothermal installation will be
used, which re-injects the water to the
ground and therefore preserves water
resources. (This technique is not widely
used in China.)
Biomass is another potential
renewable energy resource as Jiamusi
is located in the middle of large cornfields. Rice husk, rice and corn straw
are common biomass sources in China.
While there are opportunities to develop
biomass as a fuel in Jiamusi, Dalkia will
implement such a project only if viability is confirmed by a feasibility study.
Making a Difference
The modernization of Jiamusi’s
municipal heating network has not
only helped Dalkia achieve its goals
of expanding the system and boosting
energy efficiency, but it has also yielded
the effect intended by the Chinese gov-
ernment when it opened the door for
private-public partnerships in the heat-
ing sector: Fewer coal-fired block boiler
houses are operating in the municipality
today, and greenhouse gas emissions
and water losses have been cut.
