remedied, not only for the benefit of reducing climate change but also to make Europe
more independent from energy imports.”
Gyorgy Laszlo, vice president of the
Hungarian District Heating Association,
commented that the Hungarian public and
politicians consider district heating as a
technology of the past suitable only for
panel buildings. “At present,” he said, “a
significant part (70 percent to 80 percent)
of the district heating is at high-rise housing
blocks, and these buildings don’t meet the
exigencies of the time with excessive consumption and little or not heat regulation.”
Commenting that these and other
problems (like some customers’ difficulty
in paying the bills) need to be resolved,
he said, “…we should make sure not to
confuse these problems with the discussion
over the contribution of district heating
and cooling towards sustainable energy
market in Hungary, throwing the baby
out with the bath water.”
EU Donates Public Heating
Facility in Serbia
As reported by EMportal, the European
Union has handed over a new public heating
plant to the mayor of Valjevo, Serbia. The
plant was built with EU funds managed by
the European Agency for Reconstruction
(EAR). The head of the European Commission’s Delegation to Serbia Political
Section Thomas Gnocchi and Daniel Giuglaris,
head of EAR in Serbia, presented the plant
Sept. 19 to Mayor Zoran Jakovljevic.
The new facility, which cost 4. 7 million
euros ($6.86 million), will increase the
number of houses connected to district
heating in Valjevo by 50 percent. Receiving
a half billion euros (approximately $730
million) in EU donations in the last eight
years, the Serbian energy sector is by far
the biggest recipient of EU funds. The
donations were provided for rehabilitation
of Serbia’s electricity production and distribution, the reduction of air pollution from
electricity producers and environmental
protection and improvement of public
heating across the country.
Wilcox, these FM D type units are completely
prewired and prepiped and can be fired
with natural gas or No. 2 fuel oil. They are
equipped with low nitrogen oxide burner
and Nationwide Boiler’s exclusive Econo-Stak™ economizers for fuel efficiency. If
ultra-low NOx performance is required,
Nationwide Boiler’s CataStak™, a selective
catalytic reduction system capable of reducing NOx to 5 ppm or less, can be installed.
ENMAX Begins Construction
on New Calgary System
ENMAX Corp. began construction
Sept. 11 on the Calgary Downtown District
Energy Centre, part of a multiphase project
that will provide heating to up to 10 million
sq ft of new and existing buildings in
downtown Calgary, Alta. The Centre will
be owned by a subsidiary of ENMAX, which
will develop and operate the facility and
its thermal distribution system. Commercial
operation is anticipated by late 2009. The
district energy system will be a first for the
city and one of the largest noninstitutional
systems of its kind in Western Canada.
Construction of the Centre is made
possible with funding from the governments
of Canada, Alberta and the city of Calgary.
Through the Canada-Alberta Municipal
Rural Infrastructure Fund, the federal and
provincial governments will each contributed
Cdn. $10 million ($9.4 million) and the city
of Calgary will contribute Cdn. $11.8 million
($11.1 million).

ABB to Power World’s
Biggest Financial District
ABB is designing a complete power
distribution system for what will be the
world’s largest international financial services
center and information technology hub
when completed in 2017: Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) in the rapidly
growing state of Gujarat, India. To be
designed to international benchmark levels
of grid reliability, power quality and energy
efficiency, GIFT will function as an environmentally friendly eco-city incorporating
renewable energy sources like solar power,
energy-efficient intelligent buildings and
district cooling.
Consisting of about 100 million sq ft
of commercial and residential floor space,
including the signature 80-story Diamond
Tower, GIFT will dwarf comparable financial
districts like London’s Docklands, Shanghai’s
Pudong and Tokyo’s Shinjuku. The total
cost of the entire project is estimated at
$16.3 billion. Construction is scheduled to
