IDEA’s New Chair:
Q & A With Dennis Fotinos

president and chief executive
officer of Enwave Energy Corp.,
was elected IDEA chair at the
annual meeting held at the
99th Annual Conference &
Trade Show in June 2008.
Enwave Energy Corp. supplies
district heating and cooling
services to downtown Toronto,
Ont. District Energy magazine
recently spoke to Fotinos
about his career, IDEA and
today’s district energy industry.
His remarks are shared below.

Q. Tell us a bit about your
company. In a nutshell, what
does it do?
A. Enwave is a district energy
company that provides steam
heating and renewable lake
source cooling to help heat
and cool buildings in down-
town Toronto, Ont., Canada.
Q. What is your role
at Enwave?
A. I run the business. I am
responsible for establishing
and then implementing the
long-term strategic direction
and short-term objectives of
the company. These are
reflected in my annual budget
and business plans of the
company, which are approved
by my board of directors. On a
daily basis, I oversee every
aspect of the business from
sales to operations to finance.
Basically, I am held to account
by a board of directors and
shareholders for the company’s
overall performance. However, I
have successfully assembled
the best team in the industry
to help me out. I rely on their
initiative and expertise in a
variety of disciplines to ensure
that our goals are not only
met but regularly exceeded.

Q. How and when did you
get involved with Enwave?
A. In January 1998, I was
appointed chairman of the
board of the predecessor entity,
the Toronto District Heating
Corp., which was a nonprofit
public sector company. I developed and executed the corporate reorganization plan that
