Moderated by Steve Tredinnick of Syska & Hennessy Group,
the symposium served as a forum for in-depth discussion of
the guide’s technical content. Mark Spurr, Eric Moe and Bryan
Kleist of FVB Energy presented an overview and key findings.
Additional authors, peer reviewers, industry experts and Middle
East representatives also provided their insight and observations
corroborating regional best practices. Topics covered included
technical guidance on business models; plant design; distribution
systems; building interface; and controls, metering and operations.
Leaders Elected, Honors Presented
At IDEA’s annual business meeting and awards luncheon
Tuesday, elections were held for new directors and officers for
2008-2009. Dennis Fotinos of Enwave Energy Corp., was elected
chair; Juan Ontiveros, University of Texas at Austin, was elected
vice chair; and David Toombs, Citizens Thermal Energy, was
elected second vice chair. Thomas Guglielmi, NRG Thermal LLC,
was re-elected secretary/treasurer. Newly elected to three-year
terms on the board were Robert Maffei, Perma-Pipe; Aurel
Selezeanu, Duke University; and Patricia Wilson, Affiliated
Engineers Inc. Johnathan Coleman, JA Coleman LLC, was re-elected
to a second three-year term. Bob Smith of RMF Engineering will
serve as immediate past chair.
Also at Tuesday’s luncheon, President Thornton conveyed
special IDEA thanks and presented chairman’s awards to members

during the past year. Recipients were Renato Derech, Con Ed
Steam Operations, and Mark Vogler, Citizens Thermal Energy,
for co-chairing the Distribution Workshop; Douglas Garron,
Harvard University (accepted by Bob Manning), and Russell
Price, Stanley Consultants, for the successful 21st Campus
Energy Conference; Rita Chahoud, Tabreed, and Dan Mizesko,
US Chiller Services, for the Second District Cooling Symposium;
Monica Westerlund, Westerlund Communications Inc., Jack
Kattner, Kattner Associates, Cliff Braddock, Austin Energy, and

The District Energy Space awards highlighted growth in
both North America and beyond, with certificates presented
for outstanding achievement. Overall, nearly 33,868,495 sq ft
of space was reported as committing to district energy service
in North America in 2007. That figure was added to IDEA’s
running total of square footage committed to North American
district energy systems since 1990, bringing the current total
to 422,714,867 sq ft. Systems beyond North America reported
an additional 237,183,645 sq ft was committed during 2007.

At the Tuesday evening chairman’s banquet, IDEA Chair Bob
Smith offered his insights to the myriad of challenges of high
energy costs and growing environmental compliance facing society
today. He also provided special recognition to members – individuals and organizations – who had distinguished themselves by
