Throughout 2006, 37 process heating
and steam ESA experts will continue to
work with qualifying plants to identify
energy-saving opportunities that may
approach $2 billion in value across the
200 industrial facilities that have applied
to participate in the program. The ESAs
focus primarily on steam and process
heating systems, which consume a significant portion of all energy used in the U.S.
industry today. More information is available at www.eere.energy.gov/industry/

Oregon State to Install CHP
The Daily Barometer, Oregon State
University’s Web site, reported March 13
that the institution received endorsement
from the state to renovate its campus
energy plant. Nearing the end of its life
span, OSU’s current energy infrastructure
is between 50 and 100 years old. Two of
five boilers in the central steam plant are
currently inoperable; the three remaining
boilers cannot meet peak winter steam
demand. OSU has determined that building a combined heat and power plant
would be the most cost-effective and beneficial solution.
Plans call for the CHP plant to produce 50 percent of the energy needed to
keep the campus operational; the rest
would be purchased from PacifiCorps.
According to Bob Simonton, director of
facilities, OSU is expecting $2.5 million
from the Climate Trust and $3.5 million
from the Energy Trust of Oregon to fund
the project. It is slated to be operational by
December 2007 with a new boiler system
in place, which will function as the primary
mode of production until summer 2008
while the turbine will be installed. Once
that is operational, the boilers will provide
backup during turbine maintenance.
Simonton said the plant will include
space for a classroom that will serve as a
research and development center for biofuels. The plant may eventually run on
biofuels.
