by connecting to district cooling, Abu Dhabi
University will join a number of other prestigious educational institutions that benefit
from district cooling as well, such as Harvard
and MIT.”
Many universities in the UAE have studied the district cooling technology since it
was pioneered in the region by Tabreed in
the late 1990s.
“Now,” says Safi, “Abu Dhabi University
will have its own facility where engineering
students can study first hand how their
own 4 million-sq-ft facility has become so
energy efficient.”
The modern infrastructure is being
erected over a 4 million-sq-ft area. Construction of the new campus commenced
in April 2005, with the first phase of the
project scheduled for completion in September 2006, in time to accommodate 5,000
students for the 2006-2007 academic year.
New Web Site Seeks To
Heat Up America
The Geothermal Energy Association
(GEA) recently announced the launch of a
new Web site with updated and expanded
information about using heat from inside
the earth – geothermal energy – to produce
power and energy. The new site provides
information about where geothermal electricity is produced today in the US, new tax
incentives for the renewable resource, and
more. The site is accessible at www.geo-energy.org.
In addition to providing information
about GEA and the geothermal industry’s
annual trade show, the site now provides
a “Geothermal Basics” section, with questions and answers about a variety of topics
from environmental impacts to common
myths; a “Public Policy” section (accessible
through the “GEA Publications” tab) with
information about current policy issues,
including tax incentives, leasing, and research
provisions recently passed by Congress;
and a “Major Companies” section with
profiles about the six geothermal companies that represent over 90 percent of
geothermal operations in the United States.
