Major Cooling System
Planned for Egypt
UDC Holdings has retained FVB Energy
to provide master planning and conceptual
design for a major new district cooling system to serve the Port Ghalib resort development in Marsa Alam, Egypt. Development
is starting on a 1,500-acre site on the Red
Sea, with over 35 million sq ft of building
space planned at full build-out. UDC is
developing all infrastructure for the area,
including power generation, water desalination and district cooling. FVB is developing a distribution system master plan as
well as evaluating plant options including
absorption chillers driven with power gen-
eration waste heat, electric centrifugal
chillers and thermal energy storage.
Cogen, LEED® Part of CSU’s
Energy Policy
The California State University (CSU)
Board of Trustees has approved a comprehensive university policy on clean energy
that identifies cogeneration as a key technology supporting its goals. The policy, which
includes a provision for all new buildings
to be LEED®-certified, contains a variety of
renewable energy initiatives. In addition to
proposing new energy conservation efforts
and more efficient buying methods, the
policy supports greater energy independence for CSU and enhanced reliability of
the electrical grid – largely through on-site
energy production. Cogeneration plants,
along with solar power and flexibility to
reduce demand during transmission shortages, were named as important strategies
toward achieving CSU’s objectives.
According to the Web site renewable
energyaccess.com, the new policy puts
CSU in the lead among the top five universities in the country with clean electricity
purchases, onsite renewable power, energy
efficiency and green building standards. It
will also prevent as much as 80,000 tons
of carbon dioxide per year from being
emitted by 2010, down 17 percent from
2004 levels.
