Getting the Word Out: Whitman exhorts IDEA members to
educate policymakers, tout benefits
The Honorable Christine Todd Whitman
Former EPA Administrator and Governor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman provided the
keynote address at District Energy/CHP 2005. Transcribed here in their entirety, the remarks
include Gov. Whitman’s urging not to “hide your light – or your heating or your cooling – under
a bushel.” Citing the successful model set by the Princeton University campus energy system,
Whitman exhorted attendees to educate policymakers on how district energy and combined
heat and power fit in the range of energy and environmental solutions.

7 International Cooling Projects Focus on Series Chiller-Plant
Design: Technological changes make series chillers cost-
effective, energy-efficient alternative
Susanna Hanson, C.E.M., D.G.C.P. Senior Product Support Engineer, Trane Commercial Systems;
W. Ryan Geister, Manager of Field Sales Support, Trane Commercial Systems
As the need for air conditioning grows in all parts of the world, district cooling providers must
find ways to distribute chilled water over long distances and to manufacture and deliver ton-hours
as inexpensively as possible. The challenges of district cooling in extremely hot and humid weather
locations, equipment capability improvements, and the economics of super-sized district cooling
projects are creating a resurgence in series chiller plants.

11 Save Time and Money: Rent a temporary steam plant with
confidence
Larry K. Day, Vice President of Marketing, Nationwide Boiler Inc.
Whether in a planned or emergency outage or at peak load, district energy system operators are
one day likely to need to rent a temporary boiler or steam plant. The prospect may sound daunting,
but taking a few preliminary steps can minimize or even eliminate any installation and operation
difficulties.
14 The Problems With Oil: The Economist speaks out
Energy Information Administration
In April 2005, The Economist published an in-depth report on oil prices after nearly three months
of interviews with key oilmen in Russia, China, Europe, Texas and elsewhere. Prepared by The
Economist’s energy and environmental correspondent Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, it is the publication’s
first oil survey in 20 years. This article summarizes Vaitheeswaran’s observations and is part of
District Energy magazine’s effort to feature energy perspectives from around the globe.
