Past President Phillips Retires

Leonard S. Phillips, Manager of Steam Customers Relations, a division of the Sales Department ofthe Consolidated Edison Company of New
York, Inc., retired on January 1, 1959.
"Jim" Phillips was born December 27, 1893 at
Catasaqua, Pa. He graduated from Rayen High
School at Youngstown, Ohio and started out as a
world traveler. He was working for the Tata Iron
and Steel Company, Jamshedpur, India when the
United States entered the First World War. He
returned home by way of China and Japan in
March 1918. In July of the same year he enlisted
in the Engineer Corps and two months later left
for France.
He was invalided home in April, 1919, and
discharged in September.
Mr. Phillips graduated cum laude from Syracuse
University in February, 1924 with the degree of
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
While at Syracuse, he had his own dance band.
Immediately on graduating, he -was employed
by the New York Steam Corporation as a sales
engineer. He was later Assistant Manager and
Manager of Commercial Relations and Assistant
Secretary of the Corporation when it was merged
into the Consolidated Edison Company in March,
1954.
Mr. Phillips is a member of the Syracuse
University Club of New York, the University Club
of Larchmont, the Beta Theta Pi College Fraternity and the West of Central Park Association of
which he is also a director. His hobbies are piano
playing and deep sea fishing.
Past President Phillips became a member of
NDHA in 1929. He was General Chairman of the
1939 Annual Meeting Committee at which time
he was also Second Vice-President. He served five
years on the Insurance Rates Committee, two years
on the Membership Committee and three years on
both the Executive and Advisory Committees. He
served eight years as a member of the Commercial
Relations Committee, of which four years were as
Chairman.
First Vice-President Phillips became the 32nd
President of the Association on the resignation of
the late Fred L. Witsell to leave the district-heating
industry in January 1941.
Mr. Phillips, now a life member of the Association, has never lost his interest in it and has
always willingly responded to requests for his
valuable aid in many phases of the Association
activities.
